Speech of Shri Mohanji Bhagwat on Wednesday 24th December 2008 at Shree Aurobindo Ashram, Shillong
Respected Asst. Secretary, Bharat Sevashram Sangh, Sec. Seng Khasi Seng Kmie, dignitaries on the dais and brothers & sisters.

I work for RSS which for past 83 years in working to organize Hindus and this word Hindu it creates many misunderstanding and doubts. I will try my best to clear those in my speech but my speech is actually intended to remind you all of a common endeavor we must undertake because that is our national endeavor that is the endeavor for which our nation has been enabled by the grace of God.
Sometimes before coming here we had a chat with our respected B.B. Dutta, he commented that there is much that we can contribute but we must remember our heritage and then only we can contribute to the world. He was very right in his remark, that is exactly what Bharat is made for. Each nation on the face of this earth has some duty to perform and it is our duty to earn righteousness and to offer - give righteousness to this world and to earn the Dharma and to offer that Dharma to the world. As you know we face many problems in our family lives and our individual lives, we have so many problems and we say unless we enable our country to pass over those problems we cannot solve problems of our family life or individual life. But the problems our country is facing, some of which are our special problems, but most of them are faced by humanity the world over and humanity is seeking the answers, they have experimented for last 2000 years and has not been able to reach those answers. The last hope is our nation, Bharat. It is our God given duty to provide those answers by our own model of life. There are many problems and each can be a topic of separate speech. Many of us have studied these problems, commented on them, written about them, have researched on them, books have been written on them and people have studied the same in depth. But what is the root cause of all these problems – what is the root cause of conflict within various sections of humanity, of various religions, of various communities?
What is the cause of extortion of nature due to human progress? There is progress; humanity has progressed much by reaching other planets on the outer edge of our universe. We have conquered the Moon, we have conquered the Mars but we still don’t find happiness in our daily life. The Hon’ble Dalai Lama has said that this is the age of skyscrapers, there are tallest of tall buildings in this world but the men are loosing their heights they are becoming shorter and shorter. There are wide streets and narrow minds. These contradictions humanity wants to eradicate from human life and they are not getting the answers. What is the root cause? The basis of all the experiments of the past 1000 years is based on a particular world view. This world view says for unity uniformity is a must. You cannot be different and at the same time united. If you want to get united you have to become same – similar. You have to have one God, you have to have one language, you have to have one mode of living, you have to have one center of shradha - centre of belief otherwise you cannot live and therefore each power in this world tries to impose its own way on the rest of the world and then instead of peace, instead of love, there is conflict and hate. This world view also says that man has to conquer the nature, nature is different, man is different and there is always a struggle for existence and only the fittest will survive and therefore you have to fight, your life is for fighting, fight with everyone, everybody, everything. You have to fight and conquer and you have to be fit for fighting so there is a sort of extremism in everything and there is a sort of exclusivity in everything. We and they.
The tradition of our land Bharat says that this is not so because the modern world knows only three powers or three existences in every aspect of life – they say there is an individual, there is society and there is nature. They are all separate and always in conflict. If individual wants to progress society has to sacrifice, nature has to sacrifice. If you want natural surroundings then you should stop all progress. If you want to progress then you have to destroy nature, there will be pollution. You cannot avoid that. This is all inevitable because there is conflict. They say there is a body, mind and intellect. You must have a strong body.
If there is brain there is no brawn and if there is brawn there is no brain. So all these things always leads to some sort of conflict. Conflict resolves one problem, creates another problem and then another problem and then continuous conflict goes on. There is always tension; there is no relaxation or happiness. Our Bharat says it is not so there is a fourth thing joining everything together, in and above everything that is there, this fourth thing joins everything. There is individual, there is society, there is nature and the fourth principle of ‘Atman’ joins all of them, actually these are the manifestation of the same reality. There is diversity – diversity is a must in this world but diversity is there to realize the indebt unity – there is unity in diversity and if you realize that then unity is possible with diversity and unity must speak diversity. You have to respect every entity, every society, every identity, and every individual – that is a fact. Everybody has to be respected – every thing is created by God nothing should be destroyed. We can lead life without conflict. We can progress and at the same time preserve the nature. We can protect the natural surroundings around and at the same time and progress can be achieved. This is the tradition of our land – Bharat. This is not a theory.
There was such a life 3000 years ago and exponents of this mode of life based on the Bharatiya world view come together from time to time. This year they are coming to Nagpur, the people of ancient tradition have found that everything has sprung out from the same source. God has created everything and it is the duty of every human being to realize and to earn righteousness that is how we explain the Khasi tradition. In other words the same truth has been expounded in every walk of life, in every type of society in this world. Once whole life was based on this principle and at that time all societies/communities in the world lived together in peace, harmony and satisfaction at that time and yet progressed. We have to translate this according to modern times and prepare a model but for that we have to know our heritage, we have to know our ancestors; we have to know our traditions. We have to find a way as to how to express them in modern living so we have to analyze all this. We have to take to live like this. This is precisely what Sangha (RSS) is doing. This world view whatever name you give to it, we do not have any objection, to it, but the world knows it as ‘Hindu tradition’ because it evolved and spread from the borders of our land, south of Himalayas, surrounded by 3 seas. Our sages and saints performed penances and found out these Truths and on the basis of these truths they created values and a culture evolved from our hoary traditions. We are living with unity in diversity. The ancient literature the Vedas speak of it.
“Janam Vibhrati Bahudha Vibhajasam Nana Dharmanam Prithavim Yathoukasam”
People of many languages and many creeds (dharma) live together on this earth.
That is the gist – living together with each other, living together with nature and realizing the unifying principle. That is the gift Bharat has to give to the world – a unifying principle
– perceiving the same in our own way of recognizing God and at the same time respecting others of their ways but never converting one to another faith – conversion is then unnecessary. If it is the same truth I perceive in my way and you are preserving in your way then what is the need of conversion. If there is no conversion, there is no irritation and there is then peace. This is what the world needs and this is our God given duty to contribute this gift to the human race, to the world but we have to prepare ourselves. We cannot give to the world we do not have. We have to earn our tradition, earn our world view, we have to shape our life according to that we have to unite and we have to create an example of model life in our nation first in Bharat. For that we have to prepare each individual and unite each individual together so that there will be atmosphere of striving for common good of humanity for world peace. A new world order that various leaders of humanity dream is something of this kind but they cannot outline it exactly because they don’t have that heritage, the tradition, that is bestowed upon us. It is our duty to expound it for the benefit of world and we should be fit for that. And therefore RSS is helping everything, everyone who tries to protect his own identity and loves other identities at the same time. RSS is always with all those efforts. This concept of one identity being against other identity itself is not our concept. All identities live together peacefully with some discipline, with good intensions. They can help each other and humanity in general. That sort of society has to be created first which will demonstrate before the world, look here we are Bharatiyas – we have so many languages. So many castes and creeds and yet we live in peace and harmony.
We are inheritors of the glorious hoary culture. Actually, though the world calls it a Hindu culture, it is not a monopoly of the Hindus it is for all human beings. It is actually “Manavata” – ‘humanitarian view of life’ – live and let live. You see, we have all the power in the world but we are not using it to crush the smaller nations or poorer nations. We are creating a world order in such a way that all nations can benefit from it and every nation becomes fit to contribute for good of humanity. This view itself is our national view and that is why though we profess to organize Hindus we have termed our organization Rastriya Swayamsevak Sangha because it is our nationality. The term Hindu does not apply to any religion or particular people living in particular land. The term applies to this ancient glorious tradition, to this world view. This will become a panacea for the whole world in modern times and therefore I exhort you all to join hands in this endeavor and to become instrumental in this yeomen and God given responsibility of bringing of peace and sanity in the world and not to remain as silent spectators.
